Derartu Tulu – icon of the Olympic movement – Barcelona 1992
Derartu Tulu grew up tending cattle on the dusty plains of Ethiopia but went on to become an Olympic legend. The 21-year old from the village of Bekoji became the first black African woman to win an Olympic gold medal. She claimed the Womens 10,000m title in Barcelona with a personal best time of 31:06:02, beating South Africa’s Elana Meyer into second place.

Usain Bolt breaks the world record in the Men’s 100m and 200m final at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games

100m World Record
Usain Bolt of Jamaica won the Men’s 100m gold medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games in a world record time of 9.69 seconds, breaking his own world record of 9.72 seconds, which he set in June of that year. He broke Donovan Bailey’s Olympic record of 9.84 seconds set at the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games.
200 m World Record
Bolt would win gold in the 200m Mens final, breaking Michael Johnson’s world record of 19.32 s set at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta. Bolt set a new world and Olympic record of 19.30s.
